Manage Your Diabetes. Protect Your Vision. Protect Your Future.

Diabetes affects more than blood sugar. Over time, uncontrolled or fluctuating blood glucose can affect multiple organs — including the delicate blood vessels of the retina and potentially lead to diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.

At Susrut Eye Foundation & Research Centre, Diabetes Care and specialised Eye Care come together through our Diabetic Care Clinic, supported by visiting Diabetologists alongside Susrut's established Retina and Ophthalmology services.

DIABETES & EYE HEALTH

Why Diabetes Care and Eye Care Need to Work Together

Diabetes and eye health are closely connected. Persistently high blood glucose can damage the small blood vessels supplying the retina. Over time, this damage can lead to diabetic retinopathy.

The challenge is that diabetic retinopathy may not cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages.

By the time vision changes become obvious, significant retinal damage may already have occurred. Susrut's existing diabetic-retinopathy programme therefore focuses on screening and early detection before the condition results in irreversible vision loss.

OUR MESSAGE IS SIMPLE

Don't wait for your vision to change before checking your eyes.

Regular eye examinations can help identify diabetic eye changes before noticeable vision problems develop.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal condition associated with diabetes. High blood glucose over time can damage the tiny blood vessels of the retina. These vessels may leak, become blocked or develop abnormal new vessels. As the condition progresses, it can cause visual impairment and, in advanced cases, severe vision loss.

Leakage
Blockage
New Vessel Growth
EARLY WARNING

Diabetic Retinopathy Can Be Silent

You May Have Retinal Damage Without Knowing It

One of the biggest challenges with diabetic retinopathy is that early disease may produce little or no noticeable change in vision.

Symptoms may develop as the disease progresses.

SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE Changes in Vision
  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Floaters
  • Dark spots or patches
  • Difficulty seeing
  • Loss of vision
  • Difficulty seeing in low light
  • Changes in colour vision
IMPORTANT MESSAGE Feeling fine does not necessarily mean your retina is fine.
DIABETIC EYE SCREENING

Who Should Get a Diabetic Eye Check?

We recommend discussing regular retinal screening with your doctor if you have any of the following conditions or risk factors.

Type 1 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes
Gestational diabetes
Long-standing diabetes
Poorly controlled blood sugar
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Kidney disease
History of diabetic retinopathy

Other factors can also influence risk, so screening frequency should be determined by your treating doctor.

DIABETES & EYE HEALTH

How Diabetes Can Affect Your Eyes

Diabetes can be associated with several eye complications. Regular assessment can help identify changes that may require specialist care.

01

Diabetic Retinopathy

Damage to retinal blood vessels.

02

Diabetic Macular Oedema

Fluid accumulation affecting the macula can impair central vision.

03

Cataract

People with diabetes can also develop cataracts.

04

Glaucoma

Diabetes may be associated with an increased risk of certain forms of glaucoma.

05

Other Retinal Problems

Diabetes can contribute to complex retinal disease requiring specialist assessment.

DIABETES MANAGEMENT

Diabetes Management Is Part of Protecting Your Vision

Your Blood Sugar Matters to Your Eyes

Good diabetes management is an important part of reducing the risk of diabetic complications. Depending on your individual condition, diabetes management may involve a combination of medical, lifestyle and monitoring measures.

KEY AREAS OF CARE Diabetes Management May Include
Monitoring blood glucose
HbA1c testing
Prescribed medications
Appropriate nutrition
Physical activity
Weight management where appropriate
Blood-pressure management
Cholesterol management
Regular medical follow-up
Regular eye examinations

Managing your diabetes is not only about your sugar report. It is also about protecting the organs that diabetes can affect—including your eyes.

DIABETIC EYE SCREENING

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening at Susrut

Detect Retinal Changes Before They Threaten Your Vision

Susrut already conducts Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Camps through its Vision Centre network, with the objective of detecting diabetic retinopathy before it causes irreversible blindness. Patients requiring specialist treatment are referred to the main hospital.

06

Electrophysiology

Including ERG, EOG and VEP

WHY DETAILED IMAGING MATTERS When diabetes threatens the retina, detailed imaging can help doctors understand what is happening beneath the surface of your vision.
RETINAL TREATMENT

Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment

Treatment Depends on the Stage and Severity

Not every person with diabetic retinopathy requires the same treatment. Depending on the retinal condition, the appropriate approach may involve monitoring, laser treatment, injections or vitreoretinal surgery.

01

Observation & Medical Management

In appropriate early-stage disease, regular monitoring combined with management of diabetes and associated risk factors may be recommended.

02

Laser Treatment

Laser photocoagulation may be used in selected cases to reduce the risk of progression and complications.

03

Intravitreal Injections

Certain retinal conditions associated with diabetes may be treated with medicines delivered through an intravitreal injection.

04

Anti-VEGF Therapy

Anti-VEGF medicines may be used in appropriate retinal conditions, including diabetic macular oedema and proliferative disease.

05

Vitrectomy

Advanced disease involving significant vitreous haemorrhage, traction or retinal complications may require vitreoretinal surgery.

Treatment selection depends on the individual retinal condition, stage of disease and clinical assessment.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, eye screening and retinal care.

01 Can diabetes affect eyesight?

Yes. Diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels and lead to diabetic retinopathy and other eye complications.

02 Can diabetic retinopathy be cured?

There is no single treatment that guarantees a permanent cure for diabetic retinopathy. Treatment aims to manage the disease, slow or stop progression and prevent or reduce vision loss. Depending on the stage, treatment may involve medical management, laser, injections or surgery.

03 Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?

Good diabetes management and regular eye examinations can reduce the risk of severe diabetic-eye complications and help detect disease early.

04 Can I have diabetic retinopathy without symptoms?

Yes. Early diabetic retinopathy may have few or no noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screening is important.

05 Does controlling blood sugar help my eyes?

Good diabetes management is an important part of reducing the risk of diabetic complications, including diabetic eye disease.

06 Does every diabetic patient need an eye check-up?

People with diabetes should discuss appropriate eye-screening schedules with their healthcare provider because screening frequency can depend on the type and duration of diabetes and individual risk.

07 Can diabetic retinopathy be treated without surgery?

Some cases can be managed with monitoring and medical management, while others may require laser or injections. Advanced cases may require surgery. Treatment depends on the individual retinal condition.

08 Can diabetes cause blindness?

Advanced diabetic eye disease can result in severe and permanent vision loss. Early detection and appropriate management are important to reduce this risk.
